Walker Percy is one of our greatest Southern writers, right up there with O'Connor and Faulkner. In The Second Coming, Percy combines existential themes with social issues of personal alienation and dissatisfaction with the "American Dream." The prose is flawless and perfectly executed; the thematic content is rich and thought-provoking.Not to mention, Percy knows how to tell a story. And the plotting is perfect, with a twist at the end that is unpredictable and contextually perfect.
The man is an American literary master. You must read him!
I agree with a previous reviewer that The Moviegoer, which won him the National Book Award, is not his best work. A lot of people read that book, which was a big deal in 1961, but his subsequent novels are much richer.

I'd have missed out on what was probably the most profound reading experience of my life.
I read Percy's "The Moviegoer" a few years before I read "The Second Coming." I appreciated Percy's craft, but wasn't particularly fond of "Moviegoer." I, like most passionate readers, will devour all the works of an author when I find a new one I like. Suffice it to say that "Moviegoer" didn't send me in search of the rest of the Walker Percy canon.
Years later, I met someone (of whom I thought very highly) who recommended two books to me "Second Coming" and "A Confederacy of Dunces." I read Confederacy first (which was also fantastic) and then, somewhat reluctantly, picked up "Second Coming." I think I fell in love before the end of the first chapter. By the time I was finished, I knew this book was my soulmate. I was also sad because I knew that it might be decades before I would ever read another book that would touch me as deeply as this book did.
This story is a difficult one to do justice to in a brief description. I know every inch of this book, as I read it at least once a year now. If you enjoy an introspective, character-driven story, PLEASE read this book. While it's not a romance, it's the most quiet yet compelling love story I've ever read. Percy truly created the OPPOSITE of "inevitable conflict" (i.e. Blanche and Stanley in "Streetcar"); Will and Allie are inevitably one.
This novel is truly underread and underrated. As a another reviewer wrote, I wish I could give this book far more than 5 stars. If I had to spend 50 years on an island with one book, I'd be found on the beach with a dog-eared copy of "The Second Coming."
This book is quite easily the best book I have read all year! Granted it's only January 8, but I'm pretty sure the statement will hold. The people who have criticized this book as repetitious and boring are misinterpreting Percy's writing. What grates them about his writing, is what makes Percy a master. There are points of tedium in the book (very very brief ones), there is repetition, there are twists and turns, but all this is done in order to bring to life the great story which he is trying to tell. The story doesn't progress in a straight line, but every time it twists, doubles back and shoots out at unforeseen angles, it makes the story all the more engaging. That is the magic of Percy's writing, his characters truly come to life, warts and all. I read this book over several evenings, and the last time I sat down to read it, I couldn't put it down until it was over.
This was an intriguing book. The characters began as people who were seekers - they knew what they were leaving but not where they were headed. Percy casts a new light on mental illness, and shows how people who are "different" are not necessarily ill, they just need to find a place where they fit.
I had to read this as a part of a college class. At first I was not very sure about the book because it was nothing like what I normally read. However stepping out of my comfort zone did me some good. The Books description is accurate and not misleading. It offers a little bit of everything. For those who are going through a though time in your life I recommend it because you might be able to relate to the main character. I highly recommend it!
I almost gave up on this book a few times, somewhat bored with the writers philosophical discourses, but I continued on, wanting to know more about the unlikely relationship Will shared with the younger, mentally ill woman. I was glad that I didn’t give up on it.
Walker Percy is second only to the likes of Faulkner and Hemingway as America's novel writing treasure. He lyrical prose, biting satirical wit, and heartfelt desire to lead us all to a better place make him a must-read author for everyone. This story of a lost man and woman finding themselves in a most unusual way and gaining second chances in life is a beautiful story in and of itself. But as usual, Percy offers more, imbuing his tale (very subtly, of course) with his brand of existential philosophy and Catholic sensibilities, but never in a dull or preachy way. If you want a lovely, funny tale told with a great deal of substance, this is your cup of tea, or more properly stated, glass of bourbon whiskey.
This novel has the Percy wit, seriousness and charm, with a touch of lunacy.
His usual themes are here, the south, the Jews, the negroes, faith, golf, light reflecting off of objects, oddities of language and the ways we communicate.
It all fits into a sweet story of two temporarily lost souls and what happens to them.
Some of the characters are from an earlier Percy novel, The Last Gentleman.
Allison, one of the characters, is reading Captain Blood, written by Sabatini. One person described the protagonist of Captain Blood as someone born with a gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad. This is a good line to remember whenever you are reading Percy.
I didn't laugh as much in The Second Coming as I do in other Percy novels. But I did fall in love with this book.
There are oddities all through and, as in all of Percy's novels, you have to wait until the end to see what the author is driving at.
