Every family has its issues. For Maddy, life is all about routine. It has to be, to keep her autistic sister happy and healthy. With just Maddy and her mother as Bee’s full time carers, there’s no time in Maddy’s life for complications like friends, let alone a boyfriend. So when Bee joins a new Riding for the Disabled stable and they meet Albert, the last thing on Maddy’s mind is falling in love. Some things, she’s about to learn, are outside of our control. Albert has resigned himself to always being a disappointment to his strict father. When he meets Maddy, he gets a glimpse of what being part of a family can be like, and of the tremendous sacrifices that people will make for the ones that they love. Differently Normal is a spellbinding story of love that will leave you breathless.

Years ago, I discovered Tammy Robinson through the blogging world. I'm a self-published author and I was searching out other self-published authors to see what others were doing. Along the way, I found a lot of self-published works that weren't worth the time. Poorly edited, filled with typos, and stories that were simply not there. Not worthy of being published or the time it took to read. And I also found a few diamonds in the rough. Some writers who wrote great stories and also cared about their craft. Tammy was in the latter group.

I'm not the expected audience for Tammy's works. I'm a guy. Tammy writes what some people may consider romances. But, to me, they're more than that. They are much deeper than romance novels are. They are about very real people looking for and finding the two things that matter most in this world. A companion and love. And almost all of her stories have touched me in ways few stories do. Her first story, Charlie and Pearl, blew me away. And Differently Normal does as well. Albert and Maddy are, at the end of the day, simple people. They are relatable. They are real. And they end up finding what they didn't even realize they were looking for. Each other.

At one point in the story, Maddy relates that at home she feels needed, but out in the world with Albert she felt wanted. And she wanted more of the latter. That concept, so simply stated in Differently Normal, says so much about a fundamental aspect of the human quest.

The reality is that this is what Tammy's stories are about. Two people who find each other when they don't even realize they were looking for anything. (If there was one criticism I have of Tammy's books, it is that they all follow that same pattern. But, she does it so well with characters that you can't get away from, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter.)

And here's what blows me away about Tammy's books. From Charlie and Pearl to Differently Normal. She doesn't force a happy ending on the reader. She doesn't shy away from the unhappy ending,, the tragic ending. In other words, while casting fairy tales, she doesn't shy away from reality. That not every story ends with "happily ever after."

Differently Normal Tammy Robinson 9781521120057 Books Reviews

Just like Tammys other books this one was hard to put down. It was the perfect book for a lazy easter friday ) once again I fell inlove with her characters and was sad to say goodbye at the end of the book. Well done on another beautiful book Tammy. Bring on the next one.
I wish I could give this more than 5 stars.
Another wonderful story by Tammy. I haven't yet read one of her books that disappointed me and I've read them all.
I really liked this book, amazing characters, riveting storyline, I could not stop reading. I finished it in 2 sessions, it's just so good.
This is a book that will make you think about families and relationships and opportunities but if you are looking for a feel good read with a happy ending this is not the book for you.
Let's get things straight.....I'm a big fan of Tammy's writing. An unashamed fan! I've read all of her current books on and always love the characters and the rawness of the dialogue between characters. My "go to" reading is Historical Fiction or Action/Thriller (Lee Child etc) but there's something about Tammy's work that is like a homecoming. Maybe it's because I'm a kiwi - probably more....I appreciate the honest raw characters she develops. Being a hopeless romantic I love the connection her characters develop and the challenges they deal with along the way. One significant 'curve-ball' in the story doesn't de-rail what is essentially another great read. Keep doing what you do Tammy!! We love it. BTW - be careful with your characters else only 4 stars next time -p
This is the third book by this author that I've read. Once again, she delivers! Not only does Ms. Robinson do a good job of having character development with her main characters, she's good about developing certain minor characters. Those she doesn't develop is simply because they aren't characters who in real life would develop.

I greatly appreciate that at the core of this story, even when it isn't being talked about specifically, is the realities of autism. Now that I've said that, it's important to be sure I don't offend others with autistic family members/friends. Autism is a spectrum, so the realities in this book aren't the same realities for all with autism.

There are many more books by this author that I haven't read, and I look forward to diving into them as well!!
